AI Assistants
Equipping staff with secure AI tools to boost productivity and free up time
The Ministry of Justice is scaling secure, general-purpose AI assistants across the department. These include Microsoft 365 Copilot, ChatGPT Enterprise, and other enterprise-grade tools designed to support day-to-day work such as drafting documents, summarising case files, redacting sensitive content, and generating reports.
Following successful pilots across HR, policy, probation, and HMCTS, we are now rolling out these assistants more widely under our "AI for All" campaign. Every MoJ staff member will have access to secure AI chat tools by the end of 2025, supported by training and digital inclusion efforts.
These tools are already demonstrating significant time savings and improvements in quality, particularly for staff with accessibility needs or high admin burdens.

Case Study
Pilot Success with ChatGPT Enterprise & Copilot
MoJ has been piloting ChatGPT Enterprise and Microsoft 365 Copilot across HR, policy, probation, and HMCTS functions. With over 2,000 staff already using these tools, we're seeing significant productivity gains and positive feedback.
The pilot has demonstrated that these AI assistants are helping staff save around 30 minutes a day on average, freeing up time for higher-value work. Qualitative feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
"I have ADHD, so long reports can be overwhelming. Summaries are a lifesaver. I love it!"
Staff member with accessibility needs
"What used to take me half a day now takes 20 minutes. I've clawed back hours each week just by getting help with the first draft, the structure, or even just thinking through a problem."
Team manager
"We have daily cross-team calls, and planning the rota used to take hours. I gave it the rules, team availability, and out came a full month's schedule in minutes. Even included the reasoning behind each choice."
Scheduling coordinator
"These AI tools have given me back my headspace. I finish the day with more energy and less clutter in my brain."
Frontline worker
We are planning a full rollout of safe and secure AI assistants by the second half of 2025. In a department with the largest workforce in government, this is key to building leaner enabling services so that more resources can go to our stretched frontline services.
Key Use Cases
Document Drafting
Quickly generate first drafts of reports, emails, and briefings, saving time on routine writing tasks.
