AI Action Plan Explorer

The Ministry of Justice (MOJ) is at the forefront of responsible AI adoption across government. One year on from publishing the AI Action Plan for Justice, this explorer highlights progress against our ambitions. We are committed to being transparent about how we use AI and will continue to work with industry, academia, civil society and the wider public sector to realise its benefits safely and responsibly.

This explorer will not be updated in real-time. It represents a snapshot of our Year One progress (30 July 2025 – 30 July 2026) against the AI Action Plan for Justice, accurate as of 24 September 2026.

In Year One, we committed to establishing strong foundations, building capability and delivering early wins.

Explore our selection of case studies to discover how AI is being applied across the justice system.

In Year Two, our priority is to scale what works to improve outcomes more widely across the justice system. All future work will be taken forward in line with appropriate engagement and consultation requirements, including with trade unions where relevant.

Year 1 progress

In Year 1, our focus has been empowering our frontline operational services given the pressures on our prison, probation and court systems. However, we have also provided tools and training to support policy and strategy professionals.

As part of our AI for All programme, we have piloted and rolled out general-purpose tools to all staff. Tools like Microsoft Copilot and ChatGPT assist policy colleagues with faster summarisation, searching for publicly available research and information, and sharper drafting of advice, briefings and other documents. We encourage all colleagues to test and validate any AI-generated outputs against authoritative sources, ensuring that there is always appropriate human oversight and scrutiny.

Year 2 priorities

In Year 2, we will explore more applied policy use-cases, which could include tools/agents to support more sophisticated policy advice or to model different policy scenarios. We will also look to leverage the GOV.UK Chat solution to support clearer signposting to accurate justice information.
