AI Action Plan Explorer

The Ministry of Justice (MOJ) is at the forefront of responsible AI adoption across government. One year on from publishing the AI Action Plan for Justice, this explorer highlights progress against our ambitions. We are committed to being transparent about how we use AI and will continue to work with industry, academia, civil society and the wider public sector to realise its benefits safely and responsibly.

This explorer will not be updated in real-time. It represents a snapshot of our Year One progress (30 July 2025 – 30 July 2026) against the AI Action Plan for Justice, accurate as of 24 September 2026.

In Year One, we committed to establishing strong foundations, building capability and delivering early wins.

Explore our selection of case studies to discover how AI is being applied across the justice system.

In Year Two, our priority is to scale what works to improve outcomes more widely across the justice system. All future work will be taken forward in line with appropriate engagement and consultation requirements, including with trade unions where relevant.

Year 1 progress

In Year 1, organisation-wide learning initiatives, refreshed AI usage guidelines and regular engagement with senior leadership teams have supported safe, confident adoption of AI tools.

Across the department, we are helping staff to build practical AI skills and to explore how AI can support their day-to-day work. We are supporting staff through hackathons, hands-on training, communities of practice and opportunities to safely test and develop new ideas.

We have had impressive engagement from staff, particularly for the government-wide AI-focused One Big Thing e-learning initiative in 2025-26. Our AI Leaders and Champions network has further helped encourage responsible adoption. We have also developed an internal training resource with access to webinars and tutorials, training events, and a 'prompt library' where staff are encouraged to come up with innovative uses of AI.

Year 2 priorities

In Year 2, we will accelerate adoption by procuring a scalable AI adoption service that will deliver structured training, role-based learning and on-demand support, ensuring staff have the skills and confidence to use AI safely, effectively and responsibly. This will be complemented by Engineer Enablement (DevX) and AI leadership skills training courses, supporting capability building across the organisation.
