Year 1 progress
In Year 1, the MOJ supported growth in the legal technology sector through its continued funding of LawtechUK, which promotes innovation and adoption and champions English and Welsh law as a foundation for emerging technologies via the UK Jurisdiction Taskforce (UKJT). In July 2026 the UKJT published an AI Liability Statement, providing non-binding guidance on how existing liability laws could apply to AI products.
In March 2026, the MOJ announced an additional £4.5m in funding for LawtechUK for 2026-29. Read more about LawtechUK in the case study below.
Year 2 priorities
In Year 2, our focus will be on addressing uncertainties that may hinder adoption in the sector. This includes:
- Exploring ways to increase access to legal data, including working with the National Data Library alongside potential MOJ/HMCTS initiatives.
- Continuing to deliver the LawtechUK programme to accelerate the growth of UK legal technology businesses and increase the adoption of legal technology by SME law firms.

LawtechUK
Established in 2019, LawtechUK is a MOJ-funded programme that supports the growth of the UK's legal sector through mentoring, accelerator programmes, investor engagement and industry partnerships. It has helped to support a majority of the recorded 315 UK-founded ventures. In 2025, those companies attracted almost £189 million of investment, a 35% increase on the previous year. The additional £4.5 million investment will enable LawtechUK to continue supporting the development and adoption of legal technologies that benefit businesses, consumers and access to justice, while reinforcing the UK's position as a global leader in legal technology.
