AI Action Plan Explorer

The Ministry of Justice (MOJ) is at the forefront of responsible AI adoption across government. One year on from publishing the AI Action Plan for Justice, this explorer highlights progress against our ambitions. We are committed to being transparent about how we use AI and will continue to work with industry, academia, civil society and the wider public sector to realise its benefits safely and responsibly.

This explorer will not be updated in real-time. It represents a snapshot of our Year One progress (30 July 2025 – 30 July 2026) against the AI Action Plan for Justice, accurate as of 24 September 2026.

In Year One, we committed to establishing strong foundations, building capability and delivering early wins.

In Year Two, our priority is to scale what works to improve outcomes more widely across the justice system. All future work will be taken forward in line with appropriate engagement and consultation requirements, including with trade unions where relevant.

We will strengthen AI leadership, governance and ethics, data and digital infrastructure, and procurement to support AI adoption.

Year 1 progress

In Year 1, the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) broke new ground in a number of ways. The MOJ was the first department to appoint a Chief AI Officer and set up a dedicated AI Unit, bringing in skilled AI fellows, engineers and interns from industry to transform our services. We also pioneered the recruitment of forward-deployed engineers across government. The department has driven high levels of staff engagement through organisation-wide upskilling, training and support initiatives led by the Justice AI Unit.

Year 2 priorities

While this action is complete, we will continue to ensure the Justice AI Unit is staffed with the top-tier talent needed to drive transformative change across the justice system. In addition, the Justice AI Unit will strengthen its collaboration with wider justice system partners, including with the newly formed PoliceAI.
