Year 1 progress
In Year 1, the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) established departmental AI governance and risk management infrastructure to support the safe, responsible and effective adoption of AI across the organisation. The internal AI Steering Group brings together operational, policy, legal, data, security and enabling functions to guide our AI deployment. The group has provided a regular forum for constructive challenge and has helped refine the department's approach to AI governance and assurance, working alongside an AI Risk Working Group. We have also issued guidance across MOJ and its Arm's Length Bodies to support teams to understand the steps, controls and precautions required before AI tools move toward wider deployment.
Year 2 priorities
In Year 2, we will focus on continuing to embed, refine and evaluate our AI governance. As the department's AI portfolio grows and more products transition from experimentation into operational use, our priority will be ensuring that governance arrangements remain proportionate, practical and consistently applied across all areas of the Ministry of Justice and its Arm's Length Bodies. This will include keeping guidance, policies and risk protocols up to date as the AI landscape evolves.
