The Ministry of Justice (MOJ) is at the forefront of responsible AI adoption across government. One year on from publishing the AI Action Plan for Justice, this explorer highlights progress against our ambitions. We are committed to being transparent about how we use AI and will continue to work with industry, academia, civil society and the wider public sector to realise its benefits safely and responsibly.

Year 1 progress
In Year 1, there has been substantial progress to strengthen and join up data across the justice system. Key programmes such as BOLD (opens in a new tab) and Data First (opens in a new tab) have advanced data linking and analytics, enabling the MOJ to identify priority datasets. Through the Criminal Justice System (CJS) Data Improvement Programme, we have worked with CJS partners to improve cross-agency data sharing, generating new insights and a better understanding of system-wide challenges such as victim attrition.
Year 2 priorities
In Year 2, our priorities include piloting new solutions under the Connecting Criminal Justice Data programme, such as Justice ID, to enable more reliable tracking of individuals across the justice system. This will include more automated data flows between agencies, which can enable future AI use cases.
We also plan to expand our linked CJS dataset to include police data to improve insights and end-to-end performance reporting for decision-makers. Further data linking with education datasets is underway to support the development of predictive analytics capabilities.

In Year One, we committed to establishing strong foundations, building capability and delivering early wins. In Year Two, our priority is to scale what works to improve outcomes more widely across the justice system. All future work will be taken forward in line with appropriate engagement and consultation requirements, including with trade unions where relevant.
