Year 1 progress
In Year 1, the MOJ has embedded transparency at the core of its AI approach, with a standardised process in place to meet the Algorithmic Transparency Recording Standard (ATRS). Multiple AI products (in pilot and at scale) have completed ATRS returns ready for publication, with strong engagement with the Government Digital Service. The department has regularly shared its progress publicly through ministerial engagements, conferences and industry events, and social media.
We have developed an internal AI portfolio tracking tool capturing key AI projects and initiatives across the department, visible to all MOJ staff and ministers. This portfolio management approach enables teams to work autonomously while maintaining appropriate oversight by the Chief AI Officer. The tool tracks ATRS compliance, alongside wider risk and data protection requirements.
Year 2 priorities
In Year 2, we will focus on strengthening and scaling these arrangements, including streamlining and automating reporting to ensure compliance remains sustainable as the AI portfolio grows. We will continue to outwardly communicate our progress as appropriate.
